Osteopathy is a complimentary, manual therapy. The osteopath treats areas of the body that are not functioning as they should. The aim is to work on these areas to a point where the body's own self healing ability can take over. Osteopath's look to find the source of a problem and therefore generally work on the whole body. For example a knee problem may be caused by pelvic imbalance or a stomach problem may be affected by the way you breathe.
Cranial Osteopathy/Craniosacral Therapy: is a ‘hands’ on therapy involving very light touch of the therapist’s hands. The therapist listens, via the hands, to what is going on in your body, and in this way both identifies and relieves pain or tensions held in the body. You may feel a deep sense of relaxation, and possibly become aware of heat, tingling, pulsations or other sensations as your body expresses a deeper level of health and healing. Cranial osteopathy is based on a number of findings about the body’s subtle physiology, which were made by American osteopaths in the 1900’s. These findings show that every cell in a healthy body expresses a rhythmic movement, which has been called craniosacral motion. At the core of the body the cerebrospinal fluid, which bathes and cushions the brain and spinal cord, expresses this motion in a tide like ebb and flow; while bones, organs and other structures in the body each follow their own particular pattern of movement.
Visceral Osteopathy: involves gentle manipulation to affect the organs including the lungs, heart, digestive tract, kidneys, liver, uterus & ovaries. This is possible by virtue of their connective tissue support system. In health each organ expresses a subtle motility and is surrounded by fluid lined membranes that enable healthy motion. Restrictions within and around the organ may occur that can be detected and treated.
